Digital Dharma by Dr. Deepak Chopra

Whenever I heard people discussing AI, I often felt limited in that space. I believed I couldn’t contribute much because yoga and spirituality couldn’t be “objectified” through machine learning. But one day, I came across a book by Dr. Deepak Chopra through a family member. It instantly intrigued me, and I knew I had to read it.

We often believe AI is a replacement for wisdom or compassion, but the book Digital Dharma is here to explain how AI is a gentle partner helping us remember who we already are. The author Dr. Deepak Chopra explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can deepen spiritual quotient (SQ) and improve our mental well-being. Dropping the fear of AI, he reframes it as a supportive tool for reflection, self-discovery, and emotional balance.

He mentions 4 roles through which AI can expand our awareness :

  1. AI as a Spiritual Guide

Chopra highlights how AI chatbots - like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity - can shift from being just tech tools to becoming confidants, guides, even spiritual advisors. By prompting them wisely, we can use AI to explore values, process emotions, or meditate on gratitude and purpose. This isn’t about replacing human therapists or gurus - it’s about adding a consistent, supportive voice in our inner journey.

  2. Digital Dharma: AI Meets Ancient Wisdom

In his book Digital Dharma, Deepak Chopra walks us through a simple four-part system • Introduction to AI & Prompts: Understanding how to talk to chatbots.

    • Seven Levels of Growth: From basic needs like safety to transcendence, there’s structure for every stage.

    • Practical Exercises: Guided prompts help you self-assess and reflect - AI becomes your inner map.

    • Ethical Compass: Using AI mindfully to bolster collective health and compassion.

  3. Real-World Impact

    • Mental Health & Therapy: AI makes emotional space more accessible - it’s available, non-

judgmental, and private. Studies show talking with chatbots can improve mood, reduce loneliness, and increase happiness, especially during hard times.

    • Personal Growth: AI can offer daily affirmations, meditations, or wisdom from sages like Rumi and Buddha, as an example.

  4. Ethical & Spiritual Balance

AI isn’t conscious or holy. We are. The value lies in how we use it. AI can’t love or experience - but it can help reflect our deeper desires and values back to us. It’s a mirror, not a guru. The spiritual work still comes from within and human intuition must be trusted.

Putting Digital Dharma Into Practice

  1. Daily Prompt Companion: Start your morning journaling with an AI: “What am I most grateful for today?”

  2. Emotional Check-In: Ask your chatbot: “Help me process my stress over work.” Note recurring patterns.

  3. Meditation Guide: Prompt: “Create a 5-minute guided meditation on calm breathing.”

  4. Spiritual Reflection: Try: “Share three quotes by Rumi about love and presence.

Deepak Chopra combines timeless spiritual insight with today’s AI tools. Making a simple, accessible path to deepening our inner lives.

I believe one should read this book as it breaks the stereotype that AI cannot be accommodated in the spiritual world. By using the right prompts, we are giving ourselves an objective guru. One that is not seen, but it can surely help you access the eons of literature from the past. So that you can choose and pick your own path, without feeling alienated from the “modern technology” revolution.
